Inside Look into the Life of a D1 Student Athlete

In this interview, UNC-Chapel Hill track and field athlete Delea Martins offers an inspiring and authentic look into the daily life of a Division I student-athlete. From pre-sunrise runs to evening homework sessions, Delea shares how she navigates the challenges of balancing academics, athletics, and personal wellbeing.

She walks us through a typical day, from 6 a.m. training runs and full days of classes, to afternoon practices, strength sessions, and late-night studying—highlighting the discipline and time management it takes to compete at an elite level while pursuing academic success.

Delea also discusses her achievements on the track, including winning the 4x400m at the Eagle Elite Invitational, setting one of the fastest relay times in UNC history, and earning All-America honors in the distance medley relay.

Beyond athletics, Delea is part of a new era for collegiate athletes through NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) opportunities. She shares her experience signing with Article 41, an agency that connects UNC athletes with national brands. So far, she has partnered with Athleta, DripDrop, Futurescope, and SolidCore, with upcoming deals in the beauty and wellness space.
